About the Certificate

The Graduate Certificate in Energy Conversion and Transport in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering provides working professionals and graduate students with an opportunity to expand their knowledge of energy systems through a flexible and specialized graduate education program. Designed for individuals seeking to advance their expertise in the generation, conversion, storage, and transport of energy, the program emphasizes both the fundamental principles and practical applications of modern energy technologies. The curriculum equips students with the technical skills needed to address the growing demand for efficient, sustainable, and innovative energy solutions across a wide range of industries.

The certificate provides a strong foundation in energy conversion processes, including thermodynamic systems, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, combustion, power generation, and energy transport technologies. Students develop an understanding of how energy is transformed and transferred in mechanical and aerospace systems, enabling them to analyze, design, and optimize energy-related processes and equipment. Particular emphasis is placed on alternative and renewable energy methodologies, including solar, wind, bioenergy, hydrogen, and other emerging technologies that are playing an increasingly important role in meeting global energy needs.

Earning a Graduate Certificate in Energy Conversion and Transport in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering not only strengthens a student's academic and professional background but also enhances career opportunities in industries such as aerospace, power generation, manufacturing, transportation, renewable energy, and research and development. In addition, the certificate can serve as a pathway toward a master's degree in mechanical engineering or aerospace engineering at Missouri S&T, allowing students to continue their advanced education while building expertise in one of the most critical areas of modern engineering.

The graduate certificate program is open to all individuals holding a bachelor’s degree in an engineering or hard scientific discipline, and who have a minimum of two years of professional experience, or are currently accepted into a graduate degree program in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.

The certificate program consists of four courses. In order to receive a graduate certificate, you must earn a cumulative GPA ≥ 3.0 in the four certificate courses taken. 

Students admitted to the certificate program will have non-degree graduate status, but will earn graduate credit for the courses they complete.

Once admitted to the certificate program, you will have three years to complete the certificate, as long as you maintain a B average in the courses taken.

Certificate Applicant 

The following are the courses offered in the program. Courses are 3 credit hours each, unless stated otherwise. The University reserves the right to change or cancel courses as needed. 

Total Courses: 4 (12 credit hours)

At least two of the courses must be from core MECH ENG or AERO ENG graduate courses (5000-level), and at least one must be an advanced course (6000-level). For the energy conversion and transport graduate certificate course list and descriptions, please see the graduate catalog.

This program is 100% online: no campus visits required.

Courses are semester-based. Students typically take one or two classes per semester and finish the program in one year.

Courses are offered asynchronously, meaning they do not have regular meetings. They may consist of various media and content — such as online discussions, videos, quizzes and recordings — that students review and complete at the time of their choice.

Pathway to a Master's Degree

Are you a working professional who wants to earn your master's degree, but you don’t have time to take the GRE/GMAT? Then start in a graduate certificate program. Graduate certificates were designed as a pathway to a master's degree.* The admission requirements are more relaxed and credit earned will count toward your degree. Once you successfully earn your graduate certificate, you can continue with the corresponding master's degree without having to take the GRE/GMAT.
